Soot Sprites, or Susuwatari ("wandering soot"), are small, black, fuzzy, spherical creatures with big eyes created by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. They first appeared in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and later in Spirited Away (2001) as industrious workers in Kamajī's boiler room. They represent innocent, unseen energy that inhabits abandoned places. [Ghibli Wiki]
